Protection against counterfeit electronic components

emea_counterfeit.jpg

Counterfeiting of electronic products has long been a major global problem, but the size of the trade in handling such illegal parts has grown in recent years to the point that it is only just smaller than the market for illegal pharmaceutical products, which is universally recognized as being massive.

And just like the illicit pharmaceutical goods sector, the market for counterfeiting of electronic components has no moral compass. Exchanging hands are illegal parts that are destined to be used in the automotive or aviation sectors and, as a result, the safety of end-users is being put at risk.

Countless lives could be lost if one or more of these inferior quality counterfeit components failed in a car or aeroplane. Fires, shocks or explosions are very real risks, not to mention the enormous financial liabilities and the fact that just one counterfeit component could render all guarantees between parties throughout the supply chain null and void.

Of course, there are several common-sense measures that can be taken to combat the likelihood that you are in receipt of counterfeit electronic components. You could improve all inspections that are carried out and tighten up on inventory management techniques to ensure your supply chain is not unknowingly passing on illegal parts. You could set up an anti-counterfeiting policy and seriously toughen up your brand protection strategy, while at the same time putting a comprehensive obsolescence management program into place.

Rochester Electronics is proud to be an industry leader in the fight against counterfeit and sub-standard semiconductors. An authorized source remains the best protection from counterfeit and sub-standard devices! No amount of testing and screening can give the same 100% assurance.

Distribution agreement between Solicomp and Osram Opto Semiconductors

1111_01.jpg

Osram Opto Semiconductors and Solicomp just signed a distribution agreement for the European area at electronica 2014. Solicomp GmbH, headquartered in Geretsried near Munich, has already been working closely with Osram for a few years now, distributing obsolete parts and surplus inventory. Starting today, the company is authorized for the distribution of the entire product portfolio of Osram Opto Semiconductors within Europe.

Frank Holz and Daniela Krammer, Managing Directors at Solicomp GmbH, Stephan Kreusel and Michael Wohs, Director Sales EMEA and Vice President EMEA at Osram Opto Semiconductors, signed the distribution agreement for the European area at electronica 2014.

Osram Opto Semiconductors is one of the guiding lights both in technological development and in the manufacture of high-quality products. For nearly four decades, the high-tech company has been investing in research and developing new products on the technological cutting edge - enabling Osram Opto Semiconductors to set international standards in the fields of illumination, visualization and sensor technology.

The expertise of Osram Opto Semiconductors extends from basic semiconductor technologies to individual customer applications. The company produces top-quality solutions in various fields such as sensor technology and laser systems. The product portfolio comprises high-performance light-emitting diodes (LEDs) – e.g. for automotive and general lighting applications – miniature LEDs for indicators, as well as infrared diodes (IRED), semiconductor lasers and detectors. The global player accords top priority to offering its customers professional and comprehensive support based on many years of well-founded expertise.

Super small and highly versatile Osram infrared LED added to the range

The Oslon Compact infrared light-emitting diode (IRED) from Osram Opto Semiconductors now closes the gap between high-power and low-power IREDs. Despite its very small package it offers impressive output. It can therefore be used, for example, for such tasks as surveillance, digital image processing, 3D measurement, pattern recognition and gesture detection.

The new infrared Oslon Compact SFH 4710 has been designed especially for industrial applications. As a mid-power LED with a typical output of 270 milliwatts (mW) from an operating current of 500 milliamps (mA), it is a welcome addition to the product portfolio of Osram Opto Semiconductors, occupying the output range between Power TopLED and Oslon Black.

The new IRED accommodates a small powerful chip with an edge length of 750 micrometers (µm) and half the footprint of standard chips in the Oslon Black. With package dimensions of 1.6 mm x 1.2 mm x 0.8 mm the Oslon Compact is not much larger than the chip itself and is therefore one of the smallest in its output class. "Even so, our new Oslon Compact has excellent heat dissipation properties and can operate at high currents", said Dr. Jörg Heerlein, responsible at Osram Opto Semiconductors for product marketing for infrared components in the industrial sector. “The high output, which is achieved thanks to state-of-the-art thin-film chip technology, combined with the small package, opens up numerous new applications, particularly where there is very little available space but performance demands are high. And if required, components can be packed very close together to increase the optical output with a high degree of flexibility.”
